Today was a very special date for me that I will remember for a long long time, before deciding to move back to Mexico, and before Cannes there was this little idea that later evolved to a big project called FOR LESS OR FREE, this project was screened in the last Cannes Film Fest Out of Competition and nothing really came out from that screening except from good compliments from my friends, family and the people that helped me out with the short film. The time passed and I was not very comfortable with the idea of just keeping the short film saved in my hard drive and later I found this great event from RTVE (spanish television) called the INVI awards which stand for Internet Audio-Visuals Innovation Awards, I hurried up to gather all the information needed for the entry because I actually found them just by coincidence a day before the deadline! hehe and some time after that, exactly 3 days ago I received an email asking for my confirmation of assistance for the event, I just thought they were inviting ever contestant but no! I later found that in the website there were the finalists, and FOR LESS OR FREE was one of them in the category of NON-FICTION DOCUMENTARY, I was so so happy that at least the film would be one of the finalists, so I immediately asked Grace Montoya, which is the editor and the responsible of some editing and the coolest intro titles ever =), that maybe our friend Camila Escat (which helped us in the documentary and is one of the coolest girls from Spain that I’ve met), would be interested in coming to the awards ceremony, she accepted! but today i received another e-mail from the organizers that she needed to say a speech ” in case we won”, hehe so I thought “this is very suspicious” hehe later that day the ceremony was live on the internet at RTVE’s website and the moment was ready.
First the nominees, then a very important executive from France came to the stage to call the winner but first he says: “I’m going to call the winner in English” and I was shocked because our short film was the only one with English Name in the title!! the time freezed for a second, and the next thing I remember was hearing “the winner is…. FOR LESS OR FREE” hooolly ssss….moke! I shouted so hard that my cat (TOBY) got scared! hehe, I was so happy and Grace which was also watching the ceremony live, called me and I couldn’t hang correctly my cellphone in my hand!,, Camila came to the stage to collect the trophy and the big check hehe and she did a killer speech in behalf of me! seriously!
The making of the video was possible thanks to Reel Ideas Studio (Claire Erwin, Bun Lee, Jim Kenney and Sebastien De Castell) for the microgrant they gave us, the people from all over the world interested in participating, the musicians involved Asevatu – Fernando Perez and Jonah, and of course the team that helped me with the footage, interviews etc.. etc.. you know who you are =), Thank you so much to all of you!

Calavera Illustration

Hi everyone, long time no see, a lot things going on but finally I manage to get some time to upload this new illustration for a contest based in Mexico, one of the guidelines being the use of a skull, so this piece shows the skull and the use of the word ‘mister’ translated into different languages, also I’m using the word skull and calavera just to make a clear statement of what this piece means.
I was truly inspired by the french illustrator Skwak which his work is amazing.

REAL IDEAS STUDIO 09

Here’s a very nice preview of “4 LESS OR FREE” the last short film by Grace and Me, this the intro for this year’s REAL IDEAS STUDIO Microgrant’s program, in which I participated, since 2007 I’ve been involved with Adobe, and I can’t be more thankful with Claire Erwin, Jim Kenney, Bun Lee and all the rest of the crew. =)

Ráfagas Miradas 2 contest!

Grace got this really cool idea for the contest by mounting a stage in a table with toys, cardbox, clay and even a carrot!
Tthose days we couldn’t get the chance to record the video with a good camera, but she did a great job doing the color correction, the fire and laser effects while I did the animation frame by frame using this time Flash, and also I did the hot rod monster(which I’m definitely going to draw more of them soon!) using Illustrator and Corel Painter, the result is this! I love it!

Trident Bites!

Grace and me did this killer video for the Trident Bites contest in Mexico but unfortunately(and literally unfortunately because we don’t have to much luck in any contest in our home country) we didn’t win, but we sure had a lot of fun doing it, I specially learned how hard is the stop motion hehe, but I discovered that I love it

Imagine Cup 2008 France

So i was trying to achieve something in the Imagine Cup since the 2006 the one in India, that time it was a different category ( Interface Design ), next year me and my partner decided to enter the Short Film Category since we were having this class of 3d animation , we did a great job in the 1st round (storyboard) unfortunately we ended being out of the competition just for 2 points that we needed to advance.
We thought that was going to be our last year since we were graduating, but we read the rules many times and we had another chance to enter to our last imagine cup, we did a great job with the storyboard, they selected us to be one of the 30 teams in the 2nd round, we didnt sleep for a month and we managed to do a great animation short film, which result in us going to the finals in Paris.
A lot of hard work going on with a new short film done in just 36 hours for the final round but finally we won the 2nd Place! =D

Reel Ideas Studio 2008

I went to Cannes on May 9 to be part of the Adobe Reel Ideas Studio Contest 2008, and it was great! i was there for 2 weeks developing a new short film that was part of a contest, there were 9 teams including us ( Team Odyssey ) , me and my team won the “Best Documentary Award” and the “Team Journal Most Visited Award”, it was a great experience, meeting people from all around the world and working with them in a complete different place that the one we’re used to, if you want to check the short film i did, go to the Film Section here in my website or go to the Adobe Reel Ideas Studio website (AT THE THEATER > Team Odyssey).
